Yo-Yo Day

Yo yo yo to all our friends!  Today is yo-yo day!  Before we jump to the celebrating part, let's take a brief look at the history of this wooden toy.  Yo-yo's were first invented in Greece around 500 BCE.  They were usually made of terracotta and were painted with designs.

We know this because ancient Greek pottery that we have found has images of children playing with these toys.  Eventually they started to be made out of wood and came to France in the 18th century.

The modern word for this stringed toy, yo-yo, is actually a Tagalog word meaning "come, come".  For more information, visit the following link:

To celebrate today Brandon and I went to the dollar store and picked up two different types of yo-yo's: a manly car wheel shaped one for him, and two light up ones for me.

We watched a few tutorials on youtube for various tricks we could try with our new toys.  They are amazing!  If you really want to see some cool ones, check this out!  One guy actually unstrings his yo-yo and then restrings it in the middle of his trick!!!!

 

We tried a few of these tricks, but weren't very successful.  We had a lot of fun anyway!

World Environmental

Helloooo adventurers and Happy world enviroment day. I hope you your day was as epic as our. Here are some of the ways we celebrated today.

We went to the local hot spot the D.I. aka the thrift store. There we scored an impressive pair of bowling shoes for five smackers (bucks) You may ask how this is celebrating enviroment day, it's called recycling. Those babies will get us some free bowling and pay for themselves after two games of bowling.

So we live next to the jordan river park way and we decided to see who could pick up the most trash. Sounds fun right? trust me when you make it a game anything can be fun. 

Besides picking up trash we took time to get to know our backyard by taking pictures and observing the local animals. We saw a beaver, tons of ducks, and a huge spider spinning its web. Check out the pics

National Hug a Cat Day

Today actually celebrates three holidays in one.  Hug a Cat Day was our holiday of choice, but is also Applesauce Cake Day and Old Maids Day.  Somehow I find it fitting that Old Maids Day and Hug a Cat Day are the same day. :D

Our apartment complex does not allow pets, but we have a friendly neighborhood watchcat that lives in the forest that is our backyard.  We call her Squatch, short for Sasquatch.  Squatch is short and has absolutely no tail to speak of, but seems sweet.  Occasionally she leaves us carcases of small mammals and birds as a sign of her acceptance of us.  I figure she must think we are lousy hunters so she is trying to help us out.  If we can find her before the day is over we might be able to coerce her into letting us hug her to fulfill the requirement.

Our Mission

Seeing as this is our first post we will explain our mission. Me and my wife plan on celebrating every random holiday that no one has ever heard of.  In doing so we will provide you the person that stumbled on this blog, with all the tools and ideas necessary to make the most out of your random holiday. So sit back and take this adventure with us.
